Shannon Gaels defeated Coolmeen in the 2nd Round of the 2016 Div 3 League on a score of 2 – 05 to 0 – 10

This was a close competitive game between two evenly matched sides. Shannon Gaels started the brighter with two points from play. Coolmeen gradually got into the game & Sean McMahon opened their account with a fine point from play. Further Coolmeen pressure resulted in David Neenan pointing a free. Just before the break Padraig Neylon got his fist to a long delivery to goal for Shannon Gaels.

The early stages of the second half were keenly contested as both sides sought to gain dominance. In this period Coolmeen scored points from David Neenan (2) & Alan Normoyle. Shannon Gaels responded with two points of their own. Padraig Neylon pointed a 45m free to increase the Gaels lead before David Neenan pointed a free for Coolmeen to reduce the margin. At this stage Shannon Gaels keeper Mike O’Shea saved a pile driver from David Neenan. The Gaels broke up the field and were awarded a penalty. Shane Tubridy stepped up and stuck the ball in the net to give Shannon Gaels a five point lead. Coolmeen responded in determined fashion with points from Micheál Brooks & Cian Murphy. In the closing stages of the game Coolmeen piled forward & Kevin (Val) McMahon pointed two frees to leave the minimum between the teams. In injury time Coolmeen had one last chance to force an equiliser but the Shannon Gaels defence held firm to claim a deserved victory.
